The COMET
(epilepsy WARNNIG)
March 2026
"The Comet" was developed over approximately two months for a design course titled Margins to Matter, which focused on personal research and the creation of interactive installations.
The project is centered on the short story "The Comet" by W.E.B. Du Bois, a renowned Black author and activist leader. Set in a post-apocalyptic America after a mysterious comet impact in New York City, the narrative follows the experiences of a young Black man. This silent film retelling incorporates imagery from the early 1920s and photographs of prominent Black figures, all sourced from digital archives such as the Wayback Machine and archive.com.
The film provides a symbolic exploration of racial dynamics, interwoven with research on the emergence of Black excellence in the early 1900s. The conclusion pays homage to Tulsa's Black Wall Street and the Tulsa race massacre, highlighting that despite societal advancements in racial relations, there remain deep national scars requiring mending for full closure to be achieved.
Created using Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, the short film utilized various materials found through extensive research on archive forums and websites. As noted, the entire production process for this final project spanned two months.
